Short description
Will Keane, a Manhattan restaurateur, is content with his playboy lifestyle until he meets Charlotte Fielding, a free-spirited young woman. Together the pair pursue a passionate affair that forces them both to reevaluate what they want out of life, even as fate threatens to steal away their future.

- In the hospital, where Charlotte is recovering from surgery, Will reads her the poem "To a Young Poet" (1892-1950) by Edna St. Vincent Millay.
- No previews were held for film critics. Both Richard Gere and Winona Ryder publicly opposed previews, citing various reasons, while MGM released a statement saying that the actors simply did not want the film's unexpected ending to be revealed in advance.
- Filming took place in New York from September 13 to November 17, 1999.
- At the Halloween party, Charlotte portrays the poet Emily Dickinson (1830-1886) and reads an excerpt from her poem "Two Butterflies": "Two butterflies, at noon, a sigh, / Floated on the farm in waltz. / Then, leaving the firmament, / They froze on a perch. / Now again in a whirlwind they swirl / In the radiance of the heavens. / Though there are not yet ports / Where they are ready to perch."
