Short description

The Tang emperor is betrayed by one of his generals, who installs himself as emperor in the East Capital. The son of one of his slave workers escapes to the Shaolin Temple, learns kung fu, and sets out to kill the traitor who killed his father.

What's left behind the scenes

  • The film was shot in Hunan Province in a real Buddhist temple.
  • Although the Shaolin Monastery actually exists, the level of proficiency in martial arts of its monks is greatly exaggerated.
  • In 1989, the film and its sequels were shown on Soviet television in segments of 15 minutes each as part of the television almanac "Around the World" (an appendix to the "Travel Club" program). The film became a cult favorite among young people and spurred a growing interest in Eastern martial arts in the USSR.
