Short description

An uproarious version of history that proves nothing is sacred – not even the Roman Empire, the French Revolution and the Spanish Inquisition.

What's left behind the scenes

  • Richard Pryor was originally supposed to play Joseph. Shortly before filming began, Pryor got into trouble with drugs, and the role went to Gregory Hines. This was Richard Pryor’s second unsuccessful collaboration with Brooks. The first time, he was supposed to play Bart in “Blazing Saddles,” but the film’s producers were frightened by the comedic actor’s bad reputation.
  • At the end of the film, Mel Brooks promises a sequel to the comedy, announcing future episodes (“Vikings,” “Hitler on Ice,” and “Jews in Space”), but in reality, no sequel was planned, and the title “History of the World, Part 1” and the announcement of a sequel were just a joke.
