Short description
At her 25th high school reunion, Peggy Sue faints and awakens in 1960—back in her senior year, before her marriage and all her regrets. Given a second chance to relive her youth, she must decide whether to change the choices that shaped her life or embrace the past that made her who she is.
What's left behind the scenes
- Debra Winger was initially cast in the role of Peggy Sue, but the actress fell during a bike ride and injured her back, forcing her to withdraw from the project.
- The filmmakers had to resort to an optical illusion in the opening scene. If the scene had been filmed as usual, the camera and technical staff would have been reflected in the mirror. Therefore, a stunt double (view from the back) played Kathleen Turner instead, gesturing simultaneously with the heroine, but in a mirrored reflection. This created the impression that Turner and Helen Hunt’s characters were reflected in the mirror, when in reality it was a normal shot with the heroines and the stunt double in front of a large mirror frame.
- In 1960, Peggy Sue warns her sister to stay away from red M&Ms. Their production was halted in 1976 when a potentially carcinogenic substance was discovered in the dye, and in 1986 (after the film's release) their production and sale were resumed with a different dye.
- In the original script, Rosalie, the woman in a wheelchair that Peggy Sue sees at the reunion, was a gymnast who was injured in a fall. Additionally, in the original script, Peggy Sue tried to use her knowledge of the future. She invented pantyhose, persuaded people to invest in Xerox stock, and tried to prevent an accident involving Rosalie.
- When Debra Winger was cast in the lead role, she asked Penny Marshall to direct the film. Marshall discussed filming the movie with Tom Hanks and Sean Penn, but three weeks later she was fired from the project, with the decision being made that she had taken on too much as a novice director.
- While working on Charlie’s unusual voice, actor Nicolas Cage based it on the voice of one of the characters from the animated series “The Gambee Show” (1956-1968), and wore dentures.
